Solo Brathuke So Better follows the journey of Virat (Tej), a Vizag-based youngster, who believes that relationships and marriage will wreak havoc in a person’s life. He believes in this principle so much that he even ends up writing a book with 108 shlokas, which is a major hit in his college.

But Virat is no incel. He just does not like the idea of love, and he does not even respect the institution of marriage, be it in his own family or even Gods. But then, life teaches him that the laws of nature are much more stronger than his shlokas. The rest of the story is all about what happens to Virat when he undergoes a change of heart, and wants to get married.

Written and directed by Subbu, one of the recurring themes in the story is that of loneliness, and how everyone needs a companion at some point in their lives. There is even a hilarious gag involving Telugu filmmaker R Narayana Murthy, who advises youngsters to not follow in his footsteps when it comes to living a solo life. But the most impressive part is how well Subbu delves into loneliness and companionship through the eyes of Subbu’s uncle (Rao Ramesh), who is the best written character in the story. Although Telugu filmmakers have a strange obsession with equating wives with mothers, the emotional context of this reference in Solo Brathuke So Better hits the right spot. Without sermonising too much, Ramesh’s character turns into a fulcrum which balances the entire film. However, this is the one of the very few things that go in favour of the film.

The problems with Solo Brathuke So Better are aplenty, and it begins with the tone that Subbu sets for the story in the first act. We know very little about Virat’s backstory, and thus, his devotion towards his principles does not quite gel into progression of his character arc. At some point, the conversations take a comic turn with references to getting married after 30, grey hair, kids addressing adults as 'uncle.' While it certainly evokes a few laughs, it just does not add up as far as the storytelling is concerned. The only reprieve from all this mediocrity comes in the form Govind Gowda (Vennela Kishore), whose many attempts to get married turn futile. Kishore comes to the rescue, to an extent, and his scenes feel like much-needed halts in a journey which feels increasingly futile.

Then, there is Virat himself, whose character turns so dormant, especially in the second half of the story, that after a point, you do not even understand what is holding him back from pouring his heart out. He is clearly crushed about his newfound persona and Amrutha’s (Nabha Natesh) expectations from him. But there is no urgency in his actions, and even if there is, it does not transform from paper to screen. Amrutha’s characterisation itself lacks depth. She idolises Virat till the end, and beyond that, director Subbu does not quite let Amrutha steer the direction of the story. This might as well be true for the film itself, and not just Amrutha.

In a way, Solo Brathuke So Better feels like a simple equation, where the lead character goes through a transformation with the help of a catalyst. But in the process, the film sacrifices its soul and strips its characters of charisma or an interesting personality. It makes you wonder if Virat has learnt what being in love feels like because in the end, all his focus is on getting married without truly understanding why and what makes Amrutha so special.

At a runtime of just over two hours, Solo Brathuke So Better chugs along to make its point about the need for a companion, but the journey is so bland that you might as well read a book instead.

Director David Dhawan and producer Vashu Bhagnani, the men behind the original Coolie No 1, spare no effort to confirm our worst fear: the Govinda-Karisma Kapoor 1995 starrer was best left alone.

Twenty-five years have elapsed since the producer and director duo delivered one of the superhits that defined Govinda's career as a comic hero. The star isn't at hand to carry the weight of the remake on his shoulders nor is Kader Khan available to liven up Rumi Jaffery's screenplay with his dialogue. However, their absence isn't the only reason why this Coolie No 1 is a pale shadow.

It definitely has more colour and slickness, but all its gloss is strictly superficial. The new version is flashier and louder. The hope clearly is to paper over - and drown out - the sheer pointlessness of the exercise. But no matter what the director and his son, lead actor Varun Dhawan, try, this coolie is anything but numero uno. The 2020 Coolie No 1, released on Amazon Prime Video, is no patch on the 1995 Coolie No 1.

This film isn't an update (the script remains unaltered) but an excruciatingly infantile rehash that scrapes the bottom of the barrel and comes up with nothing that could justify its existence.

Come to think of it, in a year in which nothing has gone right for the world, Coolie No 1, had it been reworked with imagination and a recognition of the times we live in, might have been the harmless bit of fun that we needed in order to take our minds off the lows we have been through. Unfortunately, this is as low as a film can get (if you don't consider Laxmii). It isn't a good note to end the year on.

Varun Dhawan, who slips into the Govinda role without ever evoking memories of that inspired comic star turn, is more swag than substance as he wends his way through Coolie No 1. When he is joined by Sara Ali Khan to sway to Main toh raste se jaa raha thha (the song begins with the line 'Back to the 90s' as if we needed a reminder) and Goriya chura naa mera jiya, the original musical set pieces are never in danger of being obliterated from Bollywood movie lore.

Everything is upgraded in the new Coolie No 1. The porter now works in a Mumbai railway station, not in a nondescript bus terminus. The heroine's father isn't a Hoshiarchand from a village but a moneybag, Jeffrey Rozario from Goa. Of course, he still has a lisping brother-in-law (Rajpal Yadav steps into Shakti Kapoor's shoes).

And the coolie, who still claims to be a scion of the "king of Singapore" to worm his way into the inner chambers of the Rozario home, does not pose as a mere millionaire, but a billionaire. He is in Goa to build a new port on behalf of his father's company.

Varun Dhawan takes recourse to mimicking many a Bollywood star - Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Nana Patekar and even Dilip Kumar - since there is nothing new on offer.

When Raju Coolie's ruse is about to fall apart, he adopts Mithun Chakraborty's dialogue delivery style to distinguish the porter from the young tycoon wedded to the heroine Sarah Rozario (Sara Ali Khan). But these tips of the hat to Bollywood of the last millennium are wayward because there is no clear context created for them in the script.

The hero is a proud porter always attired in starched, spotless uniform. He is an upright and tough guy who beats a rude passenger to pulp when the latter humiliates an older porter. But the poor guy's attempts to find a wife yield no results because of his station in life.

Raju Coolie's car mechanic-friend Deepak (Sahil Vaid) takes a shine to Jeffrey Rozario's other daughter Anjali (Shikha Talsania) and, like the character did in 1995, aggravates matters for everyone concerned. And like in the original, the climax plays out in a hospital, but since we have seen it all before, the replay of the rigmarole does not have the intended comic impact.

When Raju lands in Goa, Jeffrey Rozario, slimy as an eel, goes all out to please Kunwar Raj Pratap Singh, unaware that this guy is part of a plan hatched by matchmaker Jaikishan (Javed Jaffrey) to cut him down to size.

What goes missing completely in this ill-advised regurgitation is the inspired lunacy that made 1995's Coolie No 1 undeniably entertaining. Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan do not ape Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. Neither does Paresh Rawal, as the father of the bride, take a leaf out of Kader Khan's book. Yet the actors are unable to impart any freshness to the reworking because the script reeks of absolute obsolescence.

Coolie No 1 does not take into account that the world has changed since the David Dhawan-Govinda combo churned out hit after hit with their mad capers. The formula that yielded dividends all those years ago no longer does.

At one point in the film, Johnny Lever, playing Inspector Godbole (the role Tiku Talsania essayed in the original but with a different name and persona), says: "Main paagal ho jaaoonga (I'll go mad)". Exactly our point. Coolie No 1 is primed to drive the audience crazy and certainly not in a good way.

The workload on dialogue writer Farhad Samji (who has a cameo as a plumber called in to fix a leaking shower in a Goa resort, a pretext for the coolie impersonating a wealthy entrepreneur to run into the owner's daughter) is immense. He goes into overdrive in a bid to inject hilarity into the proceedings.

But the lines that the characters spout hinge too heavily on puns and malapropisms (devices that Kader Khan used to great effect once upon a time but have outlived their utility) to be funny. They do not have the "heaven in the docks" and "out of the box" effect that Paresh Rawal's character would have us believe.

We are at the end of the 2oth year of the 21st century and we are still being subjected to a film that believes that body-shaming or poking fun at a man with a stutter (Rakesh Bedi, in a single-scene appearance, plays this character) is acceptable.

Anuradha Chandra (Kirti Kulhari) stabs her lawyer-husband Bikram Chandra (Jisshu Sengupta) one night. The deed done, she calls emergency services and slips out of her plush apartment. The man lies bleeding in bed and their 12-year-old daughter Rhea (Adrija Sinha) is left all alone to deal with the aftermath.

The stage is thus set for Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors, an eight-part Hotstar Specials follow-up to the 2019 series. We know what has happened. The whys and wherefores remain a mystery until the very end because the accused clams up completely. For the prosecution, it is an open and shut case. For the defence counsels Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi) and Nikhat Hussain (Anupriya Goenka), there is more to it than meets the eye.

Directed by Rohan Sippy and Arjun Mukherjee - they helm four episodes each - and propelled by a clutch of flawless performances from Pankaj Tripathi, Kirti Kulhari and Anupriya Goenka, the series follows an emotionally fragile, painfully reticent woman caught in the pincers of the Indian justice and prison system.

The investigation, the charge-sheet and the sessions court trial stretch over a period of ten months. That is the time a woman takes to deliver a baby. In fact, a childbirth halfway through the show is a key plot point linked to a big reveal. One can see the twist coming from a long way off, which considerably undermines the element of surprise.

If you are looking for nail-biting suspense, Criminal Justice S2 might be somewhat underwhelming. But more than a thriller, the show is a relationship drama with multiple strands. That is how it works best. It is about the 'rebirth' not only of the protagonist - one of the more mercurial prison inmates. a minor character who gets considerable footage, is described as a zinda laash (living corpse) awaiting death (kabr ke intezaar mein) - but also of several other women who get a raw deal.

The slow-burning tale offers details in dribbles rather than hammer them in. It takes its time to peel off the layers that conceal the truth. Behind them is a web of lies and assumptions that is put to the test in a courtroom in the final two episodes.

Episode One provides a neat, cracking, interest-piquing build-up. It isn't pace that catches our attention but the steady tightening of the screws amid mounting intrigue. While the subsequent focus is firmly on the fate of the accused and how the law treats her, the show isn't a unidimensional affair.

Screenwriter Apurva Asrani adroitly indigenizes Season 2 of the award-winning British series scripted a decade ago by Peter Moffat. The adaptation retains its cultural specificity even as it expounds universal truths not only about abuse, crime and punishment but also about contemporary Indian society at large.

The prison where Anu Chandra (Kirti Kulhari) is lodged is a hellhole. The scarred woman has to fend off hostility from hardened inmates, many of them on trial for murder, and reckon with sickeningly unhygienic conditions. Hers is a nerve-wracking mental and physical ordeal. The bond she forges with two inmates, including the rasoi in-charge Ishani (Shilpa Shukla), are tenuous at best.

An advocate (a terrific Ashish Vidyarthi), who appears late in the drama, cites the Manusmriti to define a woman's role in the family and in society. "Main sirf desh aur dharm ki seva karna chahta hoon (I only want to serve my country and religion)", he says pompously. It is easy to see why he is determined to make an example of Anu Chandra.

Not everyone opposed to Anu is as antediluvian as this seasoned prosecutor, but all the others that the heroine has to contend with in the law enforcement system and in jail - see her act as blow to the 'natural' order of things.

The show opens with legal luminary Bikram Chandra winning a case on behalf of the wife and son of a lynched Dalit man. It is revealed a little later that this success has come in the wake of the advocate securing justice for a Muslim victim of violence. As he basks in the media spotlight, intercuts and brief exchanges between him and his wife reveal the latter's delicate state and point towards the likelihood of the relationship being riddled with riddles.

The show delves into several other marital relationships. Madhav's marriage, for one, appears to be a non-starter. His wife Ratna (Khusboo Atre) - he had left her on the wedding night and taken a flight out of Patna to take up Anu's case - lands up in Mumbai without warning. But the lawyer, otherwise a perfectly reasonable man, has no inclination to be the husband she desires.

Gauri Pradhan (Kalyanee Mulay) and Harsh Pradhan (Ajeet Singh Palawat), two cops, are a happily married couple posted in the same police station. Their equations, professional and personal, have a bearing not only on Anu Chandra's fate but also, obviously, on how their own relationship pans out.

Another marriage that is as good as over - we never see the man; he has left his wife for another woman - is alluded to a few times. The deserted wife is Nikhat's mom (Komal Chhabria). She still lives in hope of a reconciliation. The daughter, however, is determined never to let her estranged father back into their lives.

Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors adopts a subdued, deliberate rhythm and tone and presses them into the service of a plot that tosses and turns one way and then the other as the harried undertrial's lawyers take on their own fraternity and the Mumbai police on behalf of a woman who has all but lost the will to fight.

The controlled narrative flow and the refined acting allow the gravity and density of the tale to hold their course. Several of the key actors (Tripathi, Goenka, Mita Vashisht, Pankaj Saraswat) reprise the roles that they played in Season 1 and they know exactly what they have got to do in a lowkey crime drama.

As the self-effacing but unwavering Madhav Mishra, Pankaj Tripathi combines the earnestness of a man on a mission and the sense of humour of one not willing to take anything so seriously as to be blindsided.

Anupriya Goenka was great in Season 1. She is even better here. Playing lawyer Nikhat Hussain who joins Madhav Mishra to defend the accused, she matches her formidable co-star move for move, fleshing out a woman who fights not only to save a client but also to prove herself worthy of the black robe she dons.

Kirti Kulhari, playing the distraught, disoriented woman who has her minor daughter taken away from her and placed in a child welfare home where the girl is open to manipulation of her grandmother Vijji Chandra (Deepti Naval) and senior advocate Mandira Mathur (Mita Vashisht).

Anu Chandra could easily have turned into a caricature wallowing in misery but for Kulhari's intuitive, empathetic interpretation of a woman cornered - the audience is invested in her fate even when her impulses are difficult to understand. Apurva Asrani's screenplay bestows upon the character stoicism of the classic Greek tragic heroine kind.
